10am, clear and sunny.  Sorted nineteen days of pills.  Stayed upstairs on the laptop in the afternoon, until time to go to the Quilt Museum for Paula Nadelstern's free lecture.  Leofwyna came to so afterwards we went to supper at Tico's.  Back at home I headed downstairs where I sorted the first third of plastic before ironing the fabric I bought the other day for the back of the Compass top, which I still need to find to baste and quilt.
Thursday found a box by the door... it was from Paula Nadelstern. She'd said she'd send scraps from her home workshop and she did; a delightful mix of her recent fabric line. Leofwyna and I had lunch together at KFC then I returned home to can roasted bone beef broth and bake three batches of banana bread. Still piecing Kronberg blend blocks at the sewing table.
Monday, the last day of the year, and I finished two Nadelstern blocks I began a decade ago before my sewing room got packed up for the basement reconstruction.  I can identify the problems I set up for myself but solutions are a problem.  My resolution for the coming year is to finally put my sewing room back together so I can find certain missng items and so I can easily settle into projects, both old and new.  Even Leofwyna misses the me I am when I can do this more regularly.

Meanwhile Leofwyna is enjoying Chez Geyer and the puppies and cat are highly entertaining.  Snow dusted down during the night so New Year's day I'll be sweeping off sidewalks at both locations.
Sunday I went home to feed our cats morning and evening.  Leofwyna rode with me Sunday evening just to get out and to give Cassie a little attention; Cassie has proven to be Leofwyna's kitty wholeheartedly.  Sunday afternoon I made a run to the fabric store to get more graph template and a flat acrylic ruler as the rotary ruler was making line accuracy difficult.  I also stopped in at Barnes and Noble and found Nadelstern's new 'workbook' and got it since I still haven't found my copy of her first book and the library doesn't have it to borrow.  I'll have to request it on an interlibrary loan or FIND MINE!  Another run was made to get KFC for supper.  All this driving means I need to fill the gas tank again real soon

[I'm attaching Leofwyna's Holiday letter here.]

The end of the year got pretty hectic so I never got any Christmas cards out so please accept this missive with our apologies and our best wishes for a great New Year!
Why so busy?...well. we're short-staffed at work so there were mandatory extra shifts in addition to a mini baby boom as well as the initiation of a new computer charting program this fall at the hospital.. Any one of which were enough to be crazy making.
On the home front we are in the middle of a huge remodel of the entire first floor. We replaced the front window with a bay window, put in engineered wood floors, new counter top, sinks and backsplashes in kitchen and bath, took out the divider between the living room and dining room and painted everything. It was supposed to be done before Thanksgiving but I'm getting old and haven't been moving as fast as I used to think I did. We're trying to do as much of it as we can ourselves-demo, removal of old doors and frames, plastering and painting. We're getting pretty good with power tools. Here's a mental picture for you--imagine a VERY large reciprocating saw in our hands. I felt like the Terminater or something! Anyway, I hope when its done it turns out looking as good as it does in my head.
I had foot surgery on the 28th, planned at the last minute when they announced a major change in our insurance benefit package for 2013. If I had waited til spring like I planned it would have cost me a lot more out of pocket plus a major chunk of my vacation time. So I managed to get in just under the wire. Doc surprised me by doing a a hammertoe on both feet instead of just the right foot but I've had very little discomfort so I feel like I'm on a six week vacation off of work.
The timing was serendipitous because Etienette was dog and house sitting at a beautiful house at Pine Lake south of town.and I stayed there with her the first 5 days after the surgery. The house is amazing-right on the lake with 3 fireplaces and a collection of 21 original Sundsimo watercolor paintings. I felt like I was at some ritzy lakeside resort!
We didn't travel much this year. Took a long weekend to camp at Monroe State Park in Missouri in May, which was so relaxing. We jetted(sic) to Des Moines in September when we heard that the American Quilt Society Quilt Show was there. We both loved the additional exhibition of Japanese quilts they had.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
Love, the Sisters
Friday I got up early to feed the puppies and cat before heading out to drive Leofwyna to the hospital for her foot surgery.  And at the end of the day I picked her up again and took her to the house where I was 'sitting' so she's set up in splendor for her recovery.  This has timed out real well for us as she wouldn't have been nearly as comfortable at home with the renovation mess.  This also keeps her from trying to 'do something' when she shouldn't be doing anything.

I spent the afternoon (while waiting for the call to pick up Leofwyna) doing some preliminary work on the Nadelstern project.  I picked a pink 'prima donna' and fussy cut pieces for the point of wedges; I have begun.
Wednesday up and out to meet with Chris about the house/dog sitting that starts tomorrow.  Was shown around her beautiful home, met the dogs and cat, read through the instruction list and learned where their food and treats were.  Was even set up with a computer and shown how the tv remotes worked.  This should be an easy and pleasurable job.

Wednesday evening when Leofwyna got up we headed out for supper at Ticos and a movie (for my birthday, y'know) and we went to see The Hobbit which we had been keenly anticipating.  We were surprised to find Dwolm and his family there so we got some great hugs all 'round.  Leofwyna got us hot fudge shakes on the way home to give us strength for the opening of many prezzies.  I really surprised her with the three framed topiary prints she was regretting passing up.  And she really surprised me with some really astute discount purchases of a tablet and an led flat screen tv.  So much for sticking to stocking gifts since we'd been putting so much into the house renovation.

Thursday morning I boosted out of bed early to go feed and walk the Tse Tsus.  I spent the afternoon back at home finding and loading up the stuff to work on a Nadelstern project while housesitting.  I'm looking forward to getting back into this.  Some of the fabrics haven't been prepped yet so I'll be washing and ironing some tonight.
We did get rain Sunday evening, hurrah.

Monday my assignment was to pick up the pendant lamp before the sale ran out and to return the drapery samples.  I put a couple beef roasts in the crock pot with coconut milk and Thai peanut sauce.  Leofwyna had a continuing education class in York so I didn't finish supper preperations; the cooked meat went into the fridge for another night.

Tuesday I made a second attempt to return the drapery samples (I didn't have the receipt Monday), then seeing there was a sale in the quilting fabric I picked up some 'bilaterally symmetrical with major color changes' material for my stash.  I confess I got a wee bit carried away but there finally was some very good stuff to be had.  Coming home I noticed the check engine light came on.

Wednesday I took the car to be repaired (again); this time it was apparently a spark plug misfiring.  I picked up a swag lamp conversion kit for the new pendant lamp.   Moot was a pre-event meeting and I have quite a lengthy to-do list for the next few days.  Back at home I dealt with getting the little cupboard off the wall finally.  Leofwyna and I had both tried on a couple different occasions and had to back off and re-think it.  This time I went for brute force while she wasn't there to interject reason.  There was a little wallpaper behind it which I got stripped and then I primered the damaged wallboard above the tub suround and sink area.

I learned Gabaldon's Outlander is being made into a TV series along the same lines as Game of Thrones.  I can only fervently hope it will be on a channel we get.
WEDNESDAY

Today we headed up to Omaha to visit with little sister to entertain her while she continues her convalescence.   We stopped at Mangelson's first to get Leofwyna's embroidery threads replaced.  She's working on lovely Victorian cross-stitch ornaments.  She started these twenty years ago and is determined to finish in time for this year's Christmas tree, more power to her!  While there I found some fabric to add to my Nadelstern stash... again Leofwyna encourages me to get back to work on this style of quilting... perhaps this winter I can start up again.

Upon arriving at little sister's we wisked her off to Chang's for lupper followed by a movie, The Dark Knight.  This Batman action movie was long but held our attention.  Since we haven't seen the first movie we want to be sure to rent it and see how it developed this POV for the Batman saga.  Since little sister indicated she felt up to it, we joined her friends' birthday celebration for supper and had a lovely time meeting these ladies.
